Sanders campaign reaches its climax

Bernie Sanders finally announced his support for Hillary Clinton as Democratic candidate for the US presidency. That was what he was supposed to do all along. Working through the Democratic party demands support for the candidate that wins the primaries.of that party, whoever it turns out to be.. That support – almost guaranteed beforehand – functions as a sign of loyalty and trustworthiness towards that party. It was also what he was expected to do by all but the most credulous. The whole Sanders operation was an effort to help restore something of the progressive mass base of the Democrats, in support for one of the two capitalist parties, and for the political system itself. In that sense, the Sanders phenomenon was business as usual, albeit in a somehat unusual fashion. The announcement shows both what is usual and what is unusual about Sanders and his fanhood. Bernie, Hillary of Donald: wie krijgt de Oscar?

Het wordt nu toch wel tijd dat ik aandacht besteed aan de prijsuitreiking na mijn favoriete soapserie. Of is het een wedstrijd, dat Amerikaans presidentskampioenschap? Dan is er tenminste één kijksport waar ik fan van ben. Hoe dan ook, de campagne voor de Amerikaanse presidentsverkiezingen dus. Wat zal ik er eens van zeggen? Eén: Hillary Clinton wordt de nieuwe president, and it will be hell as usual, of nog wat erger. Twee: Donald Trump is de Grote Rechtse Boeman, tegen wie de Democraten iedereen naar de stembus hopen te jagen onder het motto: díé wil je toch niet in het Witte Huis? En ja, Trump drukt een gevaarlijke rechtse trend uit, maar het gevaar wordt door Democraten ook welbewust om tactische reden extra zwaar aangezet.
